IJGT College Classic at Penn State University - Final Results

White Battles to Win First IJGT Title

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to Penn State Golf Courses for the 2012 IJGT College Classic at Penn State on Oct. 20-21. The cold and windy weather conditions of central Pennsylvania proved to be a tough test for the juniors who competed in the nationally ranked two-day event on the Blue Course.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Cody White from Sweetser, Ind. traveled just over eight hours for his first career appearance at an IJGT event. The Indiana native came out looking to prove himself against some of the best junior golfers in the northeast. White was able to do just that as he was just one shot behind the round one leader Nathan Halowell, from Montgomery Village, Md., who posted the opening round top score of 74 (+2).

White found himself tied with his playing partners in the final pairing with just two holes to go. White, Halowell and Zach Stark from Livingston, N.J. battled for the final two holes, but it was White who was able to edge out Stark by a single strok e to capture the Boys 15-19 division title with rounds of 75-76. Stark's two-day total of 152 left him in the runner-up position, while Gregory Sibick from Williamsville, N.Y. rounded out the top three with a 77-76-153 finish.

In the Girls Division, Claire Hernandez from Palagrave, ON has only competed in one other IJGT event this season, but she has definitely made her presence felt in both events. Hernandez came to State College looking to improve upon her third place finish almost two months ago at the Labor Day Classic at Hershey Country Club. She made sure the cold weather conditions on Saturday would not slow her down as she put up the low round of the day with an even par 72.

"I just took it one shot at a time," said Hernandez. "I just wanted to concentrate on the hole I was on and the shot I was on."

The windy conditions on Sunday seemed to have slowed Hernandez up a little bit, but her six-stroke lead coming into the final round showed to be too much to overcome for the rest of the girls in the field at Penn State. Hernadez' two-day total of 152 gave her the Girls division title by an impressive seven strokes over Elma, N.Y. native Michelle Hanes, who fired rounds of 76-83. Caroline Quamme from McLean, Va. came in third in the Girls division with an 86-77-163 finish.

Gus Minkin from York, Pa. traveled to State College looking to break the trend that had begun to form for him at IJGT events. He had only competed in two IJGT events this season before the College Classic, both with impressive finishes, but Minkin was looking to finally take home some hardware as he finished in fourth place at both of his previous IJGT appearances this season.

Minkin found himself trailing David Yoon from Richmon Hill, ON by three strokes at the end of the opening round of play. His determination proved to be much stronger than the gusty winds that swirled through the central Pennsylvania landscape on Sunday. His final round 72 (E), which featured four birdies in a five hole stretch, propelled him to a 149 total score and the Boys U-14 division title.

"I was pretty confident today," said Minkin. "I felt like I could make pretty much any putt."

Minkin's final round run left Yoon's 153 two-day total in second place, while Tommy Dzwonczyk from North Abington Township, Pa. rounded out the top three with a 157 total on the weekend.

Minkin's final round also gave him the Clazic Belt Low Final Round honors for the boys, while Quamme received the honor for the girls.

The IJGT will be traveling to Hershey Links Golf Course Oct. 27-28 for the final event of the fall season in the northeast area. The tour will then be leaving for warmer temperatures down south until it returns to the north in March.
